Ticking bomb under Lake Michigan – Line 5 oil and gas pipe

There is a pipeline under Straits of Mackinac – Line 5. It is 68 years old, and it is a ticking bomb, because it can leak anytime and anywhere. It was built in 1953 and has since 1968 had around 30 spills releasing a total of 1.1 million gallons of toxic oil into the environment.

It is 645 miles long and supplies oil and gas from Canada to Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania – 23 million gallons of oil and gas every day.

The straits of Mackinac are a series of waterways linking Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The lakes supply millions of people with drinking water, it supports the region’s recreation and fishing sector and it provide habitats for many species of plants and animals.
The Great Lakes are home to 21% of the world’s fresh surface water.
The pipeline is owned by the Canadian company Enbridge inc.

The governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer demanded already back in November 2020 that the permit should be withdrawn and gave to May 12th.
When May 12th,2021 came Enbridge continued to operate, which is a violation.
It has turned into a big issue between Canada and USA.

This is just another example how the greed for profit is willing to risk destroying the environment and the natural habitat for people, plants and animals.
It is going to court and will be dragging out at the same time as the bomb is ticking.

It matters to fight – good news:

On June 21st, 2021 – TC Energy decided to give up Keystone XL. This is a big win for people and wildlife after decades of fight. In 2015 President Obama revoked the key permit for the pipeline, but President Trump reinstalled it. President Biden revoked it again on his first day in office and now the TC energy is finally giving up.
