Clothes
 |
Clothes recycling is one of the oldest types of recycling because clothes are easy to recycle. Despite this only about 15% of textiles are recyled in the U.S. When you recycle your clothes you conserve our natural resouces and provide affordable clothes to people in need. The first way to recycle clothes is to get your used clothes to those in need. In the U.S. there are many more people that get rid of used clothing than who need used clothes. Becuase of this most clothes are sent overseas to be reused.
The benfits for reusing just 100 lbs of clothes include:
Saving 2,500 gallons of water
Saving 40 gallons of oil
Saving enough electricity to run a refridgerator for 2 months
Providing clothes for 20 people |
Every year in the U.S. there are 11 million tons of unwanted textiles. Half of the clothes are made of non-renewable synthetic material. When any clothes are thrown away the material used to make them are wasted and pollution is increased. Once clothes are not in good enough condition to be worn they can be turned into rags or recycled into new fabric. Textiles can be taken apart and the strands can be rewoven.
The Gaia-Movement uses funds from the clothes recycling operations for projects all over the world. Collection boxes provide an easy way for community members to recycle and support these projects.
