GaiaWhat is Gaia?
Gaia is the old Greek word for the Earth Goddess.
The British chemist and inventor James Lovelock coined the term Gaia for his theory that the Earth is a living planet. All life forms work together in symbiosis to make this planet habitable, regulating the atmosphere, the oceans, and the climate. Learn more about the Gaia Theory.
Humans also contribute to the life of the atmosphere, oceans, and earth. We believe that humans affect the environment both positively and negatively. We believe current human activities are disrupting the composition of the environment with possible disastrous consequences.
We think that action is needed.
Mission & Objectives
The Gaia-Movement's mission is to raise public awareness to the plight of our environment and support projects to protect it.
The Gaia-Movement collects clothes in green containers located in and around Chicago, Sacramento, and Fort Wayne. The clothes are sold to thrift stores and dealers throughout the world. This provides affordable clothes to people in need and provides funding for additional Gaia-Movement projects.
Textiles are one of the easiest materials to recycle yet in America only 15% are recycled. By recycling clothes we reduce energy and greenhouse gas emmisions. We also reduce the use of natural resources.
The Gaia-Movement supports many projects all over the world. Generally the projects make it easy for ordinary people to reduce their environmental footprint while raising awareness to environmental concerns. The projects range from recycling plastics and metals in the U.S. to building firewood saving stoves in Zambia.
